What is Ferrochrome?
Ferrochrome is a kind of ferroalloy which consists of iron and chromium.Depending on the application, ferrochrome contains between 50-70% chromium.It can be divided into three categories, depending on the level of carbon in the alloy.The three types of ferrochrome alloys are:
- High-carbon (HC) ferrochrome (carbon content between 4% and 8%)
- Middle-carbon(MC)ferrochrome (carbon content between 0.5% and 4%)
- Low-carbon(LC)ferrochrome (carbon content between 0.06% and 0.5%)

Ferrochrome Applications
80% of the world’s ferrochrome is used in the production of stainless steel.The majority of ferrochrome is most commonly in stainless steel, orgin from South Africa.
MC FeCr is used in the foundry industry as well as in steelmaking plants where refining capacity is limited but low silicon content is required.
Low carbon and medium carbon ferrochrome is commonly used in the manufacture of special steels. Low carbon ferrochrome can be used to produce superalloys.
Ferrochrome Production Method
HC FeCr is produced by a blast furnace method, an electric furnace method, and a plasma furnace method.
The most common modern method of production of HC FeCr with high chromium content is smelting in submerged electric arc furnaces.
The most commonly used processes to manufacture low carbon ferrochrome are metallo-thermic reductions .

China’s high-carbon ferrochrome imports continue to increase in March 2023
According to customs data, China imports 305,600 tons of high-carbon ferrochrome in March 2023.Among them, 201,000 tons were imported from South Africa, an increase of 41,500 tons from the previous month. Imports from Kazakhstan were 43,200 tons, a decrease of 35,800 tons from the previous month. Imports from India were 34,100 tons, an increase of 2,300 tons from the previous month. 25,200 tons were imported from Zimbabwe.
